As I entered my second year of pharmacy school, I was sure that I wanted to go into a  residency program. I had it all planned out. I would complete a general PGY1 quickly followed by a PGY2 in oncology. This was aligned with what most people expected of me. I was certainly in the top group of performers in my class, and I was well known for doing research in breast cancer genomics on campus. I was confident that I could land a residency, and I was confident that I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my career.

Naturally, I felt completely lost by the end of the school year. I had stumbled across social media posts referring to industry fellowships for PharmDs, something I didn’t even know existed as a young student from the Midwest. On top of that, I met several PharmD graduates entering Ph.D. programs (again, something that many people expected me to do). Thus began an 18-month internal battle around what I wanted to do, why I wanted to do it, and how I could do it in the first place.
