With any antimicrobial agent, it is important to ensure the agent is (1) effective against the invasive pathogen, (2) safe for the patient, and (3) dosed correctly! Some of our antimicrobial agents are FDA-approved at fixed doses based on phase III clinical trial data, but as time goes on, more and more phase IV data emerge. Micafungin is one of those agents that have accumulated additional dosing data since its approval in 2005. Based on the pharmacokinetics of micafungin and the increasing body weight of patients around the globe, it may be time for a dosing change. But what does the data say?
